The noblest cause mankind can have at stake X

Both fascinating and hilarious, David Dowty presents “Great Moments in the History of Syntax: the Invention of the Trace (1847)“.

If the theory is any good at all, shouldn’t that be “the _discovery_ of the trace”? :-)

Take that up with the generativists and minimalists. From variable-free Providence, I’d say that you’re right, but that is exactly why “invention” is the best term here.

I guess that was pretty snarky. What I meant to say was that I don’t see why blog comments need to be “helpful” with anything. As for snarky, they seriously aren’t intended that way. Except maybe that last one.

fair enough. in general, i assume most people dont take word processor criticism as helpful feedback.

Oh, you’re talking about the LaTeX thing? It wasn’t meant as feedback about the notes or anything, since I don’t know enough about the subject to give that. I just like to evangelize. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think that Emma would be sympathetic to it. I know that she’s already a Mac nerd (which is my other topic of evangelism), and couldn’t remember if she normally uses LaTeX or not, though she and I have discussed it before.
