The Getty Center
My friend Andrew and I went to the Getty Center this morning before he had to head into work today.
I was really looking forward to seeing the John Humble photography exhibit since finding out about it back in March.
We didn’t have a lot of time, but the Humble exhibit was really great, and though I’d seen most of the photos already online, it was really great to see full-sized prints of everything. My favorite of the collection is still this garish capture of the Los Angeles river:

(More pictures from the exhibit are available both at the Getty Center exhibit site and Humble’s own site–see links above.)
I really want to get a copy of the collection’s book. I flipped through it in the bookshop and it was very beautifully laid out.
We had just a little bit of time to check out another exhibit on the same floor, Tim Hawkinson’s Zoospia. Just four pieces, but they were pretty cool, especially Leviathon:

I would have to say that the true highlight of the Getty trip, however, was Hawkinson’s Überorgan, this monstrously large organ made out of plastic bags and foil-covered cardboard tubes. Compositions for the instrument are fed in on large sheets:
Here’s a video of the Überorgan that I took while it was playing:
More pictures of the Überorgan here.
