It was only…

The following is guaranteed to make you laugh:(via jwz)

Firetrucks are available

Today, as we were waiting for the light so that we could cross the street, an old man waiting alongside started chatting up Ben. I should mention that Ben is sick right now and can’t hear very well. (Ben adds, “Some sort of ear, nose and throat deal. Can’t hear out of his right ear.”) So the old man asked about where Ben went to school, found out it was MIT, said something about his high school and then asked if Ben knew the MIT student who did this. Ben said that he didn’t, so the old man started telling him about the invention, saying something about how “he figured out a way to climb mountains”. Then he said something like, “so firemen don’t have to use ladders to climb up, they can just self-propel.”

To which Ben casually responds, “Firetrucks, hmm. Interesting.”

To which the old man responds, “Not trucks! People! People!”

(Ben says, “You have to explain: I can’t hear well, he’s an old man who starts randomly talking to me, I thought he said ‘firetrucks’ and I thought he had said something utterly ridiculous about firetrucks being able to propel themselves up mountains. But I didn’t want to hurt his feelings so I just said, ‘Firetrucks, hmm. Interesting.’”)

Hmm. Interesting.

I took Europe by storm

This just in:

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) — A storm dubbed “Emma” slammed into Europe Saturday with high winds and heavy rain, killing at least two people, authorities said.

[…]

Europe began feeling the effects of Emma late Friday night, according to Deutchscher Wetter Dienst (DWD), Germany’s national weather service.

Wind gusts of up to 190 km/h (118 mph) — the strength of a Category 3 hurricane — were clocked in the higher elevations of Austria, Corriveau said. Sustained winds as of Saturday night ranged from 50 km/h to nearly 80 km/h (31 mph to 50 mph). Winds were clocked at 98 km/hr (61 mph) in Denmark.

Sorry I’ve been so M.I.A. lately:

Spring ‘08 is in full swing, and I’m happily busy starting a sort of new project, cleaning up my FYP (revised version to come), TAing for Polly’s Intro Syntax course, enjoying the bizarrely warm winter (*ahem* contextually salient comparison class), and taking two classes on topics I know very little about.

I won’t promise a more detailed post, since it tends to be the case that when I make such promises no such post ever arrives, but I think I’ll be posting more frequently this semester since I have fewer main entrees on my plate (w00t extended metaphor).

Back west

What a week it’s been. So last week I wrapped up my third semester, which was perhaps the busiest and most intense that I’ve had yet (L&P proofing, TAing, two classes, first year project, SNEWS). I’m looking forward to next semester, starting on some new work and having more time in general to breathe.

Also, Simon is officially no longer an undergraduate! His thesis is done, and hopefully he’ll post it soon :-P I’ll definitely miss my Don Juan kitteh next semester. Simon has been a great companion in both semantics and life.

Currently working off jetlag and general fatigue in California. Will return with more contentful content soon.

Claire Danes and gaps

j/k on the not massive posting post.

I just thought of my favorite line from Shopgirl in which Claire Danes’s character asks her male suitor, “Are you the kind of person that takes time to get to know, and then once you get to know them, they’re fabulous?” That question always struck me as odd-sounding, and I think the reason why is because it’s a not-quite parasitic gap. That there’s a not-quite right gap dependency going on is made even more striking in the continuation–no ellipsis!. Check out Jason Schwartzman’s confused reply in the video after the Continue Reading »

Re-up

It’s been a while since I’ve been massively posting so I thought I would take a moment to say that I probably won’t be massively posting anytime soon. I’m knee-deep in writing up my first year project (drafts of sections may be posted as they get completed), as well as starting to think about a variety of new semantics ideas (color color COLOR!–that’s what I get for living with two perception people). But regular programming should resume in about two weeks or so.

Oh! I’m also super busy because my hard drive died again about a week ago. The repair this time is taking forever (the manufacturer has to be called up so that I can get a new drive for free under the warranty).
