Dabbling in PHP...office space...the Answer...shopping at Apple...
Day 2 of Geeklog, and I've found most of my confusion easily solved due to Geeklog's great design. Still haven't quite figured out how to work with images (and the HTML formatted post mode only allows some very basic HTML), but I imagine that will be another easily tackled problem.
I've gotten set up with office space at the Department, which is fantastic, except that I don't yet actually have claim to a desk in the office because of some confusion surrounding who's where. So while I would very much like to start going in, I don't fancy the idea of going into the office and reading on the couch until someone comes to clear up which desk I can take. Despite that, I am very excited about getting started, hopefully working on exceptive constructions some more. I'm diving into a very semantics heavy courseload for the semester, as there's not much else being offered, but that's exactly the sort of courseload that I want! Richard Heck had a seminar on Vagueness that was cancelled, unfortunately, but there's another seminar on Conditionals in the Philosophy Department that I'm looking to take, and that will be good!
Now, here's something peculiar: in German, the gender of a compound word is derived from the gender of the last word in the compound. Therefore, der Streich (masculine: stroke) + das Holz (neuter: wood) = das Streichholz (neuter: matchstick). But the other day, I learned that Antwort (answer) is not das Antwort as I had always thought (it's das Wort, neuter: word), but rather dieAntwort! Even more peculiar is that Antwort isn't even really a compound word because ant- is only a prefix. Have yet to find any explanation for this, but I thought I'd just share this puzzle.
Finally, this is a few days old, but check out what happened when I tried to visit the Apple Store while the WWDC '06 Keynote presentation was going on. I imagine that they were taking down the PowerMacs and replacing them with the new Intel MacPros!
