I wrote about Speculative Grammarian's "Choose Your Own Career in Linguistics" a while ago, being terribly amused by their computational linguistics track. What I hadn't looked at was the straight up linguistics track, which is itself fitting as well...
On the straight ling track to grad school, this adventurist had to make a terribly hard decision:
You decide to go to grad school in linguistics..
The first big decision you have to make is whether you want to go into a program that follows mainstream Chomskian linguistics, or if you would prefer to pursue something more of a minority view.
Alas, the two camps are often bitterly at odds. Some people follow mainstream Chomskian linguistics simply because it is mainstream and Chomskian—which can border on intellectual dishonesty. Everyone who pursues the minority programs does it because they believe in it, but your career opportunities can be more limited.
