I'd been following David Sedaris' work for years and had sort of given up on seeing him read live. Who knew that it would take a cross-country move to bring him to me?
Someone in the department had gotten tickets to see David Sedaris at the Providence Performing Arts Center (beautiful venue, by the way) for his birthday and invited me to tag along when his girlfriend couldn't go. Now it's been a while since I've read or heard Sedaris, but I had to go. I've been meaning to see him read live for years now.
Besides Sedaris being ridiculously poignant and funny, what I really loved about his reading was how much of a real person he was. I'm at a nice turning point in my life, I think, where celebrities have stopped becoming celebrities and I'm more open to the idea of everyday people with extraordinary uniqueness.
